Read the passage and answer questions 22-25.
Between Denmark and Sweden there is a narrow strait called the Øresund. For many years, people crossed it only by ferry. In 2000 a new connection was opened: the Øresund Bridge. It links Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with the Swedish city of Malmö.
The connection is about 16 kilometres long, but it is not only a bridge. It starts in Sweden as a bridge of about 8 kilometres. Then it reaches an artificial island called Peberholm, and after that it goes under the water through a tunnel to Denmark. The engineers chose a tunnel for the last part for two reasons: a high bridge there would be dangerous for aeroplanes flying to Copenhagen Airport, and large ships needed free space to pass.
The bridge has two levels. Cars and buses drive on the top level, and trains travel on the lower one. Today thousands of people cross the border every day. Many of them live in one country and work in the other.
The bridge also became famous because of a popular TV series called “The Bridge”. Interestingly, the island Peberholm is now home to many plants and birds. Visitors are not allowed there, so nature can grow freely.
22. Choose the correct answer to the question according to the passage.
Why was a tunnel built for part of the connection?
A) to protect the plants and birds on the island
B) because a bridge was too expensive
C) because trains can’t travel on bridges

E) to make the journey shorter
23. What is the passage mainly about?
A) a series between Denmark and Sweden

C) wild birds of Scandinavia
D) the history of Copenhagen Airport

Reading Comprehension: The Øresund Bridge (Questions 22–25)
KEY FORMULA / RULE: Reading comprehension questions require locating specific textual evidence directly stated in the passage, identifying the main theme, and evaluating factual accuracy without assuming external information.
SOLUTION & OPTION ANALYSIS
Question 22: Reason for Building the Tunnel
- A) Incorrect: Peberholm became home to plants and birds later; it was not the engineering reason for the tunnel.
- B) Incorrect: Cost is never mentioned in the passage.
- C) Incorrect: The passage states that trains travel on the lower level of the bridge itself.
- D) Correct: The text explicitly states: “The engineers chose a tunnel for the last part for two reasons: a high bridge there would be dangerous for aeroplanes flying to Copenhagen Airport…”
- E) Incorrect: The passage does not state that the tunnel makes the journey shorter.
FINAL ANSWER (22): D) because a high bridge would be dangerous for planes
Question 23: Main Idea of the Passage
- A) Incorrect: The passage is about an infrastructure link, not just a sports or TV series.
- B) Incorrect: The TV series “The Bridge” is only mentioned as a minor detail in the final paragraph.
- C) Incorrect: Birds and nature on Peberholm are supporting details, not the central topic.
- D) Incorrect: Copenhagen Airport is only mentioned as a navigational hazard for airplanes.
- E) Correct: The text focuses entirely on the Øresund connection linking Denmark and Sweden, covering its construction, structure, and daily usage.
FINAL ANSWER (23): E) a connection between two countries
Question 24: Completing the Sentence about the Bridge
- Statement 1 (True): “Cars and buses drive on the top level…”
- Statement 2 (True): “…and trains travel on the lower one.”
- Statement 3 (False): Ferries crossed the strait before 2000, not on the bridge.
- Statement 4 (False): “Visitors are not allowed there [on Peberholm]…”
Therefore, statements 1 and 2 correctly complete the sentence.
FINAL ANSWER (24): A) 1, 2
Question 25: True or False Statements
- 25.1. Tourists often have picnics on Peberholm: B) False — The passage explicitly states that “Visitors are not allowed there, so nature can grow freely.”
- 25.2. The whole connection is a bridge: B) False — The passage specifies that “it is not only a bridge” (8 km is a bridge, followed by an artificial island and an underwater tunnel).
- 25.3. Some people live in one country and work in the other: A) True — The passage directly confirms: “Many of them live in one country and work in the other.”
FINAL ANSWER (25):
- 25.1: B) False
- 25.2: B) False
- 25.3: A) True
EXAM INSIGHT / PITFALL: Be careful with negative phrasing in the text. The sentence “Visitors are not allowed there” directly contradicts statement 25.1 and item 4 in Question 24. Always scan for modal negatives (not allowed, not only) to avoid distractor traps.
