10th Grade English Speaking Exam Preparation Guide
This guide provides structured sample speeches (1.5 to 2 minutes each) covering all four required topics, addressing every bullet point specified in the exam rubric.
Topic 1: Introduce Yourself
Outline: Name, Country, Language(s), Appearance, Personality, Routines, and Hobbies
Sample Speech:
"Hello everyone. My name is Alex, and I am fifteen years old. I live in Turkey, and my native language is Turkish. In addition to my mother tongue, I have been learning English at school, and I can speak it at an intermediate level.
To describe my physical appearance, I am of medium height and have a slim build. I have short brown wavy hair and hazel eyes. In terms of personality, I consider myself an outgoing, responsible, and hardworking person. I get along well with my classmates, although I can be a bit shy when meeting new people for the first time.
Looking at my daily routine, my weekdays are fairly structured. I usually wake up at seven o’clock, eat a healthy breakfast, and take the school bus. After school, I return home, do my homework, and review the daily lessons. In my free time, I have several hobbies. I am passionate about playing basketball with my friends on weekends, reading science fiction novels, and playing the acoustic guitar. Thank you for listening."
Topic 2: Describe Your House
Outline: Type of house, rooms, items, favourite room
Sample Speech:
"Today, I would like to tell you about my house. I live in a modern apartment located on the fourth floor of a seven-story building in a quiet residential area.
Our apartment consists of a living room, a kitchen, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. In the living room, there is a comfortable grey sofa, a wooden coffee table, a flat-screen television on the wall, and several framed family pictures. The kitchen is fully equipped with essential appliances such as a refrigerator, an oven, and a dishwasher.
My favourite room in the entire house is definitely my bedroom. It is painted light blue and has a large window that lets in plenty of natural sunlight. Inside, there is a single bed, a study desk with my laptop, a large bookshelf filled with my favourite books, and a wardrobe. I love spending time in my bedroom because it is a peaceful and quiet place where I can study effectively, listen to music, and relax after a busy day at school."
Topic 3: What Do You Think About Smart Technologies?
Outline: Overview, advantages, disadvantages, personal opinion
Sample Speech:
"Smart technologies have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. From smartphones and smartwatches to smart home assistants, technology surrounds us. In my opinion, these devices offer immense benefits, but they also bring certain drawbacks that we must manage carefully.
On the positive side, the primary advantage is speed and accessibility. Smart devices allow us to communicate instantly with anyone across the globe and access unlimited information in seconds. For students, smart tools make learning interactive and efficient through educational apps and digital textbooks. Furthermore, smart home systems help save energy by automatically controlling lighting and temperature.
On the other hand, there are notable disadvantages. Overusing smart screens often leads to digital addiction, sleep problems, and physical inactivity. Another critical concern is data privacy and cybersecurity, as these devices constantly collect personal data.
In conclusion, while smart technologies make life significantly easier, we should use them consciously and set boundaries so they do not negatively affect our health and relationships."
Topic 4: Talk About Your School Life
Outline: Type of school, regular activities (lessons), extracurricular activities, facilities, school clubs
Sample Speech:
"I would like to talk about my school life. I am a tenth-grade student attending an Anatolian High School. Our school has a disciplined yet friendly and supportive atmosphere.
My typical school day starts at half past eight in the morning and ends around four in the afternoon. We take a wide range of academic subjects, including Mathematics, Literature, Physics, Chemistry, and Foreign Languages. Among these, English and History are my favourite subjects because the lessons are engaging and interactive.
Beyond academic classes, our school provides several modern facilities. We have a well-equipped science laboratory, a spacious sports hall, a large library with a silent study zone, and an art studio. In terms of extracurricular activities and clubs, I am an active member of both the Drama Club and the English Speaking Club. Participating in these clubs helps me build confidence, practice teamwork, and socialize with students from different grade levels. Overall, my school life is both productive and enjoyable."
Practical Speaking Exam Tips:
- Pacing & Pronunciation: Do not speak too fast. Pause briefly between sentences to breathe and organize your next thought clearly.
- Connectors: Use transition words such as Furthermore, In addition, However, and In conclusion to make your speech sound cohesive and fluent.
- Eye Contact: Maintain steady eye contact with your teacher rather than looking at the floor or ceiling.
